EMD F45 is a type of diesel-electric locomotive produced by Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) between 1968 and 1981. It was designed as an upgrade over the previous F40PH series and was primarily used for freight and passenger service.
The EMD F45 features a 20-cylinder inline diesel engine and a traction motor for each of its six axles, allowing it to produce up to 4,500 horsepower. It also has a distinctive “bulldog” nose and four large air intakes on top of the hood.
The F45 was popular among railroads due to its versatility and reliability, and many units remained in service until the early 2000s. Some of the major operators of the EMD F45 include Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific.
Today, many F45s have been retired and scrapped, but a few have been preserved by museums and rail preservation organizations.
